Because self-interest seems natural to most Objectivists, it is easy to take for granted our understanding of it. Yet getting the most out of egoism requires the fullest possible grasp of what self-interest is, of why it is right and of how to achieve it. This course examines all three. Dr. Smith critiques several arguments for and against egoism, and explains at length the destructive repercussions of altruism. Among her topics: why rational interests cannot conflict; the “spiritual” aspect of self-interest; why it is appropriate to encourage others to pursue their self-interest; and what egoism demands from a person.
